Residential Lighting: Reducing Your Energy Consumption and Expenses

Blog

The power consumed by each bulb per month might not be extremely high. However, when the energy used in powering all the lighting fixtures in the home is added up, the amount of power and the subsequent costs can be considerably high. If you want your property to be more energy-efficient and reduce your monthly electrical bills, you should consider changing your lighting habits. Consider using these simple guidelines to achieve your energy-saving objectives.

Replace Your Inefficient Fixtures

The energy consumed by your lighting needs will depend on the type of fixtures in your home. In simple terms, some bulbs will require high power for daily operation while others are designed to minimise this power usage. The most inefficient lighting choice is incandescent bulbs. These emit light when the internal filament is heated, so they require high energy for operation.

In ideal circumstances, you should replace these with LED or fluorescent bulbs. These demand lower power, and if you choose the right wattage and light colour, you will enjoy incredible brightness. You should also note that there are halogen and xenon bulbs. These are more efficient than incandescent, but they are not as advantageous as LED and fluorescent.

Install Timers and Sensors

One of the primary problems which can increase energy consumption unnecessarily is leaving the lights on unintentionally in the home. Therefore, if you would like to limit your electrical demands, you should ensure that the bulbs are switched on and off as required. In general, you can rely in self-discipline, but installing timers and sensors is a more effective long-term solution. Timers are useful for lighting fixtures which should only be utilised during a specific period of time.

For example, if you have security lights for night use, consider using a timer to ensure that they automatically go off in the morning. For your indoor space, install motion sensors. These lighting fixtures will operate normally when switched on, but if no movement is detected, they will be automatically switched off. The sensors will be your safeguard if you forget to turn of the fixtures.

Choose the Right Switch Solutions

Finally, you should select and install the right switching solutions for your bulbs. Ideally, you should choose a single switch for a single bulb as opposed to one switch for multiple fixtures. You will avoid turning on light you do not require. For residential spaces with two exits, install two-way switches for convenient operation of the bulbs. If possible, install dimmers for advanced lighting control.
