What Are the Different Steps of Industrial Automation?

Blog

If you are ready to implement the newest and most modern automation technology into your manufacturing business, you might be wondering what all of the different upcoming steps are going to be. Naturally, this does depend on the automation that you are doing in your facility. However, commonly, these are some of the most important steps that need to be taken in the process.

Assessing Your Company's Automation Needs

Since every business performs different jobs and has different needs, you'll need to sit down with a consultant to determine just what your company's industrial automation needs are. You should look at the work that needs to be done and the efficiency issues that you might be having in your business right now, for example. Then, you can get an idea of which equipment and processes can and should be automated.

Finding the Right Automation Components

Once you and an automation designer have figured out what needs to be automated, you'll need to start looking into the machinery, equipment and controls that are needed to make the job happen. Now is a good time to determine the wiring that is needed and everything else that might be needed during installation.

Wiring and Installing Everything Properly

After all of the automation components have been procured, it'll be time to work with an industrial automation electrician if you haven't already. They will determine where new wiring, controls and outlets need to be installed. Then, they — along with their team — should take on the job of installing everything for you and putting all of your equipment in place.

Programming Your Automated Equipment

When your automated equipment is first set up, it might not be properly programmed to your specifications. You may need to program everything based on the type of machinery that you have, the materials that you're working with, the items you're making or jobs you're performing and more. Programming should be done with the help of an experienced professional to be sure that you're taking full and proper advantage of the features of your automation equipment.

Performing Testing and Monitoring

Once automation has been implemented and everything has been installed, you might be ready to put all of your equipment to work. First, though, you should perform proper testing. The crew who handles your installation should perform testing on everything to be sure it's in safe and proper working condition. They should also show you how to monitor your equipment for possible problems.
